Colorado Springs is one of the most trusted cities for former service members to live, work, and play, with more than 80,000 veterans and 111,000 active service members comprising 17% of the city’s population.

Colorado Veterans Statistics 

  • In Colorado, statistics show that the U.S. Veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than non-veteran adults.  

  • Research shows that there were on average 17.5 veteran suicides per day in 2021.  

  • The female veteran age-adjusted suicide rate decreased 24.1%, while the female non-veteran suicide rate rose 5.2%.  

  • There were 10.5% more veteran suicides in 2022 than non-veterans. 

 

Several charities are dedicated to preventing veteran suicide and supporting veterans’ mental health. Some highly-regarded organizations include Stop Soldier Suicide, the DAV Charitable Service Trust, and the National Veterans Foundation. These organizations offer a range of services, from direct crisis intervention to programs focused on mental health, resilience, and reintegration into civilian life.

El Paso County sees significant drop in suicides in 2024

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — “The recently released 2024 coroner’s report shows the yearly suicide rate in El Paso County is down 17.9%. It’s a significant decrease after having the most suicides in our state in 2023.”

“Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness,” said Colonel (Ret.) Robert “Bob” McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center.”
