SUMMARY:Juneteenth National Independence Day (US Federal Holiday)
DESCRIPTION:Juneteenth National Independence Day — the only US federal holiday in June and one of the 12 federal holidays recognized by US law. Juneteenth commemorates June 19\, 1865\, when Major General Gordon Granger and Union soldiers arrived in Galveston\, Texas\, and issued General Order No. 3\, declaring that all enslaved people in Texas were free. This announcement came two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of January 1\, 1863 — a gap explained by the lack of Union military enforcement in Texas until the war’s end. \nCongress passed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 16\, 2021. President Biden signed it into law on June 17\, 2021\, making Juneteenth the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983. \nBecause June 19 falls on a Friday in 2026\, federal employees receive a three-day weekend. For private sector employees\, observance varies by employer. There is no federal statute requiring private employers to provide paid leave on Juneteenth. An increasing number of Fortune 500 companies and major employers have added it to their paid holiday calendars since 2021. \nJuneteenth is also distinct from Emancipation Day observances in individual states\, some of which observe emancipation on different dates reflecting their own histories.

SUMMARY:Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:The first national observance of what would become Memorial Day occurred on May 30\, 1868. Then known as Decoration Day\, the holiday was proclaimed by Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic – a fraternal organization of veterans – to honor Union soldiers who had died in the American Civil War. This national observance followed the example of many local observances which were begun between the end of the Civil War and Logan’s declaration. Many cities and people have claimed to be the first to observe it\, however\, the National Cemetery Administration\, a division of the Department of Veterans Affairs\, credits Mary Ann Williams of the Ladies Memorial Association of Columbus\, Georgia\, with originating the idea of an annual date to decorate the graves of Civil War veterans with flowers.
