National Nonprofit Day (NND) celebrates the vital role nonprofits play in communities, from providing essential services to inspiring positive change. It was founded in 2017 by Sherita J. Herring, a speaker and author, to educate, empower, and recognize the efforts of those working in the nonprofit sector. The date, August 17, was chosen to commemorate the 1894 Tariff Act, which granted tax exemptions to nonprofit organizations, a policy that continues to support charitable work today.
