National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)
Purpose and Significance
NIAM aims to raise awareness about the critical role of vaccines in preventing serious diseases and protecting communities. It emphasizes the importance of vaccination across the lifespan, from infants to older adults, and encourages individuals to consult healthcare providers about recommended vaccines, including routine immunizations and newer vaccines like COVID-19 and RSV vaccines (CDC), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vaccines are a safe and effective way to prevent over 25 debilitating or life-threatening diseases, such as measles, polio, tetanus, influenza, and HPV. Immunization is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions, preventing millions of deaths globally each year and contributing to the eradication or near-eradication of diseases like smallpox and polio (National Today, US Pharmacist)
